Eblana Toastmasters Club members competed in the Area 2 Contests at Buswells Hotel on 7th October.
Sarah Sreenan competed for Table Topics and Paul Price for the Humorous Speech category.
In the Humorous Speech Contest Paul Price was up against Emer Murphy from Dublin Club and Carmen Fernandez from Society. They delivered prepared speeches lovingly practiced and competed for in their home clubs. Now they were pitched against fellow Area 2 clubs.
Emer took to the stage first with a funny take on the dating game, Carmen treated us to a unique solution for re-seeing our lives (patent pending?) and Paul Price revealed details of his youth chasing and cycling obsession. Riding in the slip stream of mid-life cyclists may give you more than fresh air we discovered. We’ll say no more than that.
Table Topics Contest
In the Table Topics Contest Sarah Sreenan from Eblana was up against Elaine Gallagher from Dublin Club and Alan Tracy from Society Toastmasters. Each contestant was called into the room one by one to give their response to the test topic of the evening ‘Where is Home?’
With the length of time it takes to take ten strides to the top of the room, they had to fashion a coherent, humorous reply to a packed room.
The replies didn’t disappoint. The audience were treated to memories of Donegal recreated in Elaine’s Dublin home, beach walks and Dublin’s natural history museum from Alan and tales of the peripatetic home of the much travelled Sarah.
A Table Topic for Everyone in the Audience!
Between breaks for preparation of contestants and counting judges’ votes, the audience got the chance to test their own speaking skills. Contest Chair Simon Scriver, still fresh from Toastmasters International Contest semi-finals in Washington this summer, threw out topic challenges to the floor. Ingenue guests, seasoned speakers and just-starting-out speakers had a go.
Finally the votes were in. John Doyle Area Director – affectionately dubbed the ‘guvnor’ – handed the decision of the judges to Simon Scrivner. Paul Price from Eblana was the winner of the Humorous Speech Contest while Alan Tracy from Society won the Table Topics Contest. Congratulations to the winners and kudos to Sarah Sreenan for getting to the area finals.
The finalists will go forward to the next competition on 21 October 2016 at the Red Cow Hotel.
Thanks to contest hosts Dublin Toastmasters and to Society Club for a great night.
